The Law Offices of David Asser are looking for a production company interested in producing a feature length film in Arizona. The movie deals with Arizona's unique immigration situation as being ground zero.The premise of the film is about an anti-immigrant Senator, his daughter and an asylum seeker. The Senator, whose character is based on a real politician, is on a crusade against illegal immigration. However, his daughter falls in love with the asylum seeker, which leads to conflict and disaster. The movie takes place in Arizona and brings together all aspects of what is special about the State, including the exceptional urban sprawl, the fear of the foreigner and healing of the Native American spirit.The timing of the movie couldn't be more poignant. Arizona's film committee has just committed itself to bring more film projects to Arizona. Local movie producers, directors and talent are waiting for projects that could be produced in Arizona. Governor Napolitano has stressed the importance of a movie industry many times. And at the same time the debate about immigration is heating up. Local politicians are feeding the fire and Arizona citizens have expressed their frustration with the current system. This movie about immigration seems to have all the ingredients to finally get all parties interested."This movie needs to be made", says David Asser, who came up with the idea for the film. "It's time that we make a movie about the real issue that is going to be America's toughest challenge in the coming years. If we're not careful the issue of immigration could lead to a new civil war in this country, because it represents everything we're afraid of and literally divides people." David Asser should know. David is an immigration attorney who has been operating in the field for over ten years. He was a press secretary for the Dutch Justice Department and dealt with the immigration issue first hand. "People would set themselves on fire in front of our building on a regular basis", says David. "And this was almost ten years ago"."This movie is real. It is about real events, real cases, real people and the real situation. What is happening at the border and the State is absolutely frightening. This week the Arizona Republic mentioned that the Aryan Nation website got over a million hits when the White Supremacists announced that they are joining a militia to protect the border. Nobody is ready for this, but this issue will lead to major civil unrest. Politicians and people don't want to deal with the issue, but here it is, right I your face. It's happening."David has been working on making this project happen since 1992. First, he tried to make this film in Europe. But there, as well as here, the production companies and television networks told him, that nobody wanted to see a movie about foreigners. According to them nobody cared. He still hears the same argument. However, he is determined."It's such a stupid argument not to make this movie", David says. "There's no such thing as a local audience anymore. The world has become too small. We have an obligation to a global audience. And that audience will see the movie, because at some point or another we're all foreigners."When asked what the attraction would be for producer to snatch up the project, David responds: "it's a beautiful but explosive love story set against the back drop of power, hate, fear and ignorance. It's about people who believe in their own cause and think they're doing the right thing. It's about suffering and the yearning for a better future. It's about our life and it's about Arizona. Actually it is Arizona"The project needs a producer and a film commission with the guts to make this in Arizona with Arizona actors, an Arizona crew and Arizona support. David says that he hopes that the new promises by our politicians to bring film to Arizona aren't just that: promises. "I hope they're not afraid to tackle a difficult subject matter and stand up to the challenge to get this movie be made.
